Rwanda Marks 32nd Liberation Day

ISLAMABAD: Rwanda’s remarkable journey from the devastation of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi to becoming one of Africa’s most resilient and rapidly developing economies took centre stage in Islamabad as the country marked its 32nd Liberation Day, known as Kwibohora.

The event, hosted by the Embassy of Rwanda, brought together federal ministers, diplomats, parliamentarians and business leaders, while also highlighting the expanding relationship between Pakistan and Rwanda Addressing the gathering as chief guest, Minister of State for Law and Justice Barrister Aqeel Malik described Liberation Day as a symbol of the courage and resilience of the Rwandan people. He praised Rwanda’s progress in governance, healthcare, education, innovation and economic development, describing its recovery as a remarkable example of national renewal.

High Commissioner of Rwanda to Pakistan H.E. Fatou Harerimana paid tribute to the soldiers of the Rwanda Patriotic Army who sacrificed their lives to end the genocide and restore peace.

She said Rwanda’s transformation under President Paul Kagame had positioned the country as an emerging gateway to Africa, with significant progress in technology, healthcare, tourism, infrastructure and education.

Highlighting Rwanda’s growing digital ambitions, Harerimana pointed to advances in 5G technology, artificial intelligence and pharmaceutical development. She also noted that more than 90 percent of Rwanda’s population has health insurance coverage and that women hold nearly 64 percent of parliamentary seats.
