Pakistan elected UN counter-terrorism vice president, India objects

Pakistan has been elected as the Vice President of the United Nations Counter-Terrorism Committee (CTC), marking a significant diplomatic achievement despite opposition from India. The CTC, a key body under the UN Security Council, plays a central role in coordinating global efforts against terrorism. India objected to Pakistan’s nomination, citing concerns about its alleged support for terrorism, particularly in the context of regional tensions. However, these objections were not accepted, and Pakistan was successfully elected with the support of other member states. Pakistan hailed the development as international recognition of its commitment to fighting terrorism and engaging in multilateral cooperation. The position allows Pakistan to contribute more directly to shaping counter-terrorism policies and initiatives at the global level. This election not only enhances Pakistan’s image on the international stage but also reflects the complex diplomatic dynamics at the United Nations, especially in light of long-standing rivalries in South Asia.
