Karachi student Develops low-cost system to Recycle Industrial Wastewater

Karachi – 23 July 2026 (MT Team) : A student of Aligarh Institute of Technology has developed an electrocoagulation-based system capable of treating industrial wastewater and making it suitable for reuse, offering a potential solution to Pakistan’s growing water shortage and industrial pollution.

The project, titled “Industrial Wastewater Treatment through Electrocoagulation System”, was developed by Noor Ahmed Ismail under the supervision of Dr Sameera Noreen. The system employs electrocoagulation and electrolysis technologies to remove pollutants, chemicals and other harmful substances from industrial effluents.

Using aluminium and stainless-steel electrodes, the system separates contaminants through an electric current, allowing the treated water to be reused in industrial processes and reducing treatment costs.

Designed to operate on a DC power supply, the portable unit can be installed in both small and large industries. Similar technologies are already being used in several countries in the production of caustic soda and other industrial products, although their application in Pakistan remains limited.

Dr Syeda Yasmin Muzammil, head of the Chemical Technology Department, said the technology could help curb industrial pollution, ease the water crisis and lower the financial burden of wastewater treatment on industries.

Environmental experts believe that such low-cost and environmentally friendly solutions could play an important role in addressing Pakistan’s industrial and water-management challenges.
