Ukraine Embassy Islamabad Marks 35th Anniversary of Restored Independence
Islamabad – 24 August 2026 (Adnan Hameed) : Ukraine on August 24 marks the 35th anniversary of the restoration of its independence, a day carrying profound meaning for the Ukrainian people, marked by sorrow for those who have fallen and pride in those continuing to fight for their right to life and a free future.
Ukraine’s independence is rooted in more than a millennium of statehood, from Kyivan Rus, the Principality of Galicia-Volhynia and the Cossack State to the 20th-century national liberation movement. Despite centuries of imperial and totalitarian oppression, including the Holodomor and the deportation of the Crimean Tatars, Ukraine preserved its national identity.
Since 2014, and particularly following Russia’s full-scale invasion on February 24, 2022, Ukraine has been waging an existential war against Russian aggression. The country says its objective remains full sovereignty, a just peace and the liberation of all occupied territories.
Ukraine also highlights longstanding ties with Pakistan. Muhammad Asad, born Leopold Weiss and a native of Lviv, stood at the dawn of Pakistan’s statehood and co-authored the country’s first constitution, says press note. Ukrainian engineers also contributed to Pakistan’s industrial sector during the 1960s and 1970s, while Ukraine strengthened Pakistan’s defense capabilities in the 1990s through the supply of T-80UD main battle tanks.
Today, Ukraine remains a key guarantor of Pakistan’s food security, delivering millions of tons of grain even amid the war, including through the “Food from Ukraine” humanitarian program.
The Embassy of Ukraine in Islamabad shared the message on its official social media accounts, highlighting Ukraine’s Independence Day, its historical ties with Pakistan, and its appreciation for Pakistan’s support for the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity. Ukraine reaffirmed its determination to endure and prevail.
