Sports Diplomacy, Youth Engagement and Pakistan’s Football Industry Highlighted at U.S. Embassy Event
Islamabad – 19 May 2026 (Adnan Hameed): The Embassy of the United States in Islamabad hosted the “FIFA World Cup 2026™ Kickoff Event,” bringing together government officials, diplomats, athletes, representatives of the Pakistan Football Federation, corporate partners, and members of civil society to celebrate the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Addressing the gathering, Natalie Baker highlighted the unifying power of sports and described football as a universal language of teamwork, discipline, determination, and hope. She noted that the event marked the first-ever FIFA World Cup launch celebration held in Pakistan.
Welcoming the distinguished guests, Baker thanked Federal Minister Hanif Abbasi, Chairman Prime Minister’s Youth Programme Rana Mashood Ahmad Khan, the Pakistan Football Federation, and corporate partners including McDonald’s, Coca-Cola, and Forward Sports for supporting the initiative.
She appreciated the role of American companies operating in Pakistan, saying that businesses such as McDonald’s and Coca-Cola continue to invest in Pakistani communities through employment generation, education support, and stronger commercial partnerships between the two countries.
The U.S. diplomat particularly praised Sialkot-based sports manufacturer Forward Sports for its contribution to international football. Recalling her recent visit to Sialkot, she said she witnessed firsthand the craftsmanship and precision involved in producing world-class footballs used in FIFA tournaments.
During the ceremony, guests were shown a special video presentation highlighting the journey of footballs manufactured in Sialkot and their path to international stadiums hosting millions of football fans worldwide.
Baker stated that the 2026 FIFA World Cup would be the largest in history, featuring 48 national teams and matches across 16 host cities in North America. She said the tournament would provide an important opportunity for the United States to welcome the world and strengthen international connections through culture and sport.
Emphasizing the importance of youth engagement, she noted that football inspires young people to dream bigger and work collectively toward shared goals, whether on local playgrounds in Islamabad or in packed international stadiums.
She also underscored the significance of sports diplomacy in strengthening people-to-people ties between Pakistan and the United States through exchanges, partnerships, and youth-focused initiatives.
Referring to preparations underway in the United States, Baker said President Donald Trump had described the FIFA World Cup 2026 as a historic opportunity to showcase America’s culture, diversity, and hospitality, particularly as the country prepares to celebrate the 250th anniversary of American independence on July 4.
She further described the upcoming tournament as the beginning of an “American Decade of Sport,” noting that the United States will host several major international sporting events through 2034, including the 2028 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games in Los Angeles.
Concluding her remarks, Baker expressed hope that these global sporting events would strengthen economies, deepen cultural understanding, and create lasting international friendships, including stronger connections between the people of Pakistan and the United States.
