Pakistani Professor Awarded Senior Fellowship of Higher Education Academy

Karachi – 1st July 2026 (MT team) : Dr. Syed Ghulam Musharraf, a Professor at the International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS), University of Karachi, has been awarded the Senior Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA) in Pakistan in recognition of his attainment against the Professional Standards Framework for teaching and supporting learning in higher education.

According to a spokesperson for ICCBS, University of Karachi, the Senior Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy is a prestigious and internationally recognized professional designation awarded by Advance HE to experienced higher education professionals. It recognizes individuals who demonstrate a sustained record of effective and inclusive leadership in teaching, as well as mentoring and supporting other academic staff.

Prof. Dr. Muhammad Raza Shah, Director of ICCBS, University of Karachi, extended his congratulations to Prof. Musharraf on this remarkable achievement, describing it as a significant milestone not only for the professor but also for the institution.

It is worth mentioning that Prof. Musharraf is a renowned expert in mass spectrometry. He is credited with establishing a modern mass spectrometry research laboratory in Pakistan and has made pioneering contributions to biomarker research, particularly through metabolomics and proteomics approaches. His research has strongly focused on addressing human health challenges, especially the treatment of β-thalassemia patients, through collaborations with clinicians worldwide.

He has authored more than 300 peer-reviewed publications, with a cumulative journal impact factor exceeding 1,300 and an h-index of 46, in addition to several book chapters and edited volumes. Prof. Musharraf also holds U.S. patents and has received numerous national and international awards, including the Tamgha-e-Imtiaz; two Gold Medals from the Pakistan Academy of Sciences (PAS), namely the Gold Medal in Chemical and Pharmaceutical Sciences and the Prof. Atta-ur-Rahman Young Scientist Gold Medal; and, Academician Asian Academy of Sciences (AAS), fellowships of the Chemical Society of Pakistan, the Royal Society of Biology (FRSB), UK, Royal Society of Public Health (FRSPH), and the Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC), UK. He is also a selected member of TYAN, GYA, and PAS.

To date, he has supervised more than 50 Ph.D. students, including numerous HEC Indigenous Ph.D. scholars.

Prof. Musharraf has received a Doctor of Science (D.Sc.) degree from the University of Karachi and also secured several competitive research grants from leading organizations, including HEC, SHEC, NIH, the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB), OPCW, PSF, and the National ICT R&D Fund.
