Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDC) is intensifying its efforts to unlock the economic potential of Pakistan’s stranded and low BTU (British Thermal Unit) gas resources, with renewed focus on the Zin Gas Field in Balochistan. The initiative reflects the company’s broader strategy to maximize indigenous energy resources while supporting Pakistan’s long-term energy security and industrial development.
Low BTU gas has historically remained underutilised because of its lower heating value compared to conventional natural gas. However, advances in technology and innovative energy solutions are creating new opportunities to convert these challenging resources into valuable assets for industrial and commercial use.
As part of its development strategy, OGDC is actively engaging with the Government of Balochistan to explore the utilisation of Zin Gas Field’s low BTU gas for industrial clusters and fertilizer manufacturing projects. These initiatives have the potential to stimulate regional economic activity, create employment opportunities, and provide a reliable source of energy for key industries operating in the province.
In another significant step, OGDC has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Uch Power Limited to evaluate the technical and commercial feasibility of using Zin gas for electricity generation. The partnership will assess whether the field’s gas reserves can be effectively integrated into power production, helping diversify Pakistan’s energy mix while making productive use of previously underutilised resources.
The development of the Zin Gas Field represents an important opportunity to reduce energy waste and strengthen domestic gas production at a time when Pakistan continues to face growing energy demand. By transforming stranded gas into commercially viable energy, OGDC is contributing to greater energy resilience and reducing dependence on imported fuels.
Through strategic partnerships, innovative resource management, and close collaboration with provincial stakeholders, OGDC continues to demonstrate its commitment to sustainable energy development. The company’s initiatives at the Zin Gas Field highlight how responsible resource utilisation can support industrial growth, improve energy availability, and contribute to Pakistan’s broader economic development objectives.
