Rabta – 3 July 2026 (MT Team) : The Tiznit-Dakhla Expressway, named the “Donald J. Trump Highway”, is a powerful embodiment of deep friendly relations between the Kingdom of Morocco and the United States of America, as well as the great mutual esteem between His Majesty King Mohammed VI, and U.S. President Donald J. Trump. In a Letter dated July 2, 2026, the King Mohammed VI, informed the U.S. President of the Very High Royal Decision to name the Tiznit-Dakhla expressway the “Donald J. Trump Highway”. In this Letter, His Majesty the King underlines that “While our relations have always been rooted in close friendship and loyalty, they have never been as vibrant and as fruitful as they have during your two terms as President”.
Speaking to the American President, the Sovereign affirmed that “your historic recognition, in 2020, of Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara will forever be etched in the memory of Moroccans, from one generation to the next”, adding that this “recognition has given unprecedented momentum to our bilateral relations”.
“To honor this mark of friendship and peace, and as a personal expression of my deep appreciation, I have taken the decision to name one of the Kingdom’s most significant highways after you, calling it the “Donald J. Trump Highway”. Stretching over 1,055 kilometers, this highway is the longest road infrastructure in all of Africa,” His Majesty the King specified.
“A strategic axis of prime importance, it connects northern and southern Morocco, also linking
Europe to the African continent. It unifies our country, in much the same way your leadership
has brought our two nations closer to each other in unprecedented ways,” the Sovereign added.
In response to this highly symbolic Initiative, the U.S. President expressed his gratitude to His Majesty King Mohammed VI in a message shared on his social media platform, Truth Social, on July 26, 2026. “Thank you to Highly Respected Mohammed VI, the King of Morocco – Such a Great Honor! I look forward to traveling the entire length of this Great Highway someday, hopefully soon”, President Donald J. Trump wrote. “Donald J. This initiative further underscores the exceptional strategic partnership between the two countries, a historic relationship that has only grown stronger under the leadership of the two Heads of State, His Majesty King Mohammed VI and President Donald J. Trump.
This expressway was built to international standards as part of the new development model for Southern provinces, launched by His Majesty King Mohammed VI on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the Green March. As one of the most significant infrastructure projects in the Southern Provinces, this expressway connecting Tiznit to Dakhla, passing through Guelmim and Laayoune among other cities, provides these regions with a highway up to international standards and offers a high level of security.
It helps significantly reduce travel times, limit traffic disruptions caused by flooding and sand accumulation, and facilitate the transport of people and goods between Southern provinces and the Kingdom’s major economic hubs. “Donald J. President Donald J. Trump to His Majesty the King: “The United States is unequivocal: We recognize Moroccan sovereignty over western sahara and support Morocco’s serious, credible, and realistic autonomy proposal as the only basis for a solution”.
On the occasion of the 27th anniversary of the Glorious Throne Day, His Majesty King Mohammed VI, received a Message from the President of the United States of America, His Excellency Donald J. Trump. In this Message, the American President extends His congratulations to His Majesty the King and to the Moroccan people, underscoring that “this year, we celebrate 250 years of American history and enduring friendship with Morocco – a bond forged in trust and mutual respect”.
On the Moroccan Sahara issue, the American President confirmed to His Majesty the King, that “the United States is unequivocal: we recognize Moroccan sovereignty over western sahara and support Morocco’s serious, credible, and realistic autonomy proposal as the only basis for a just and lasting solution”. “Any other path prolongs the status quo and is unacceptable… This dispute must end now, and the United States will continue to push toward that goal,” the Message reads.
President Trump affirms that “Your Majesty’s Wise Leadership is an anchor of stability. Morocco’s steadfast commitment to peace, combatting extremism, and safeguarding the security of Americans and Moroccans, including through its vital role in the Abraham Accords, reflects a valuable partnership for the United States. To this end, we will also work together to secure the Sahel region”.
Regarding the bilateral economic partnership, the American President’s Message states “Your vision for economic growth opens new prospects for prosperity for both our peoples, and economies.” In this regard, President Trump brings to the Attention of His Majesty the King, may God assist Him, that “I have directed my administration to encourage economic and social development with Morocco, including in the western sahara territory.” “Reliable American technology and innovation will continue to serve as partners (to Morocco) for the next 250 years in all strategic sectors, notably energy, artificial intelligence, critical minerals, and defense”. “Together, we are ushering in a new era, one that prioritizes the interests of our two peoples,” the Message concludes.
