PANAH Urges Immediate Enactment of Front-of-Pack Warning Labels to Protect Public Health

Islamabad – 30 October 2026 (MT Team) : The Pakistan National Heart Association (PANAH), in collaboration with Iqra University, organized an awareness session to engage young people in advocating for mandatory Front-of-Pack Warning Labels (FOPWLs) on unhealthy ultra-processed food products to address the alarming rise of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in Pakistan.

Addressing the participants, PANAH General Secretary Sana Ullah Ghumman highlighted the growing burden of diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular diseases and other NCDs, which account for approximately 60% of deaths in Pakistan. He stressed that excessive consumption of ultra-processed foods high in sugar, salt and unhealthy fats is contributing significantly to this public-health crisis. Citing successful international examples, including Chile, Mexico and other countries that have introduced front-of-pack warning labelling policies, he urged the government to enact mandatory FOPWL regulations without further delay. “Consumers have a fundamental right to know what they are eating. Clear warning labels can empower families to make informed food choices and protect future generations from preventable diseases,” he emphasized.

PANAH Executive Member Abdul Hafeez highlighted the critical role of youth in advancing public-health reforms. He encouraged students to become ambassadors of change by raising awareness through social media, university platforms and community engagement, and by actively supporting PANAH’s advocacy campaign for mandatory FOPWLs.

Maria, Assistant Professor at Iqra University, appreciated PANAH’s efforts to engage educational institutions in addressing pressing public-health challenges. She emphasized the importance of empowering students with knowledge and encouraging their active participation in initiatives promoting healthier lifestyles. The session featured enthusiastic student participation through presentations, an interactive quiz and discussions, reflecting growing youth interest in healthier food choices and consumer rights.

PANAH reiterated its call for immediate enactment and effective implementation of mandatory Front-of-Pack Warning Labels in Pakistan, emphasizing that informed consumers and empowered youth are essential to building a healthier nation.
