The Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDC), in partnership with its joint venture collaborators in the TAL Block, has successfully appraised gas and condensate reserves from the Lumshiwal Formation at the Bilitang-1 ST-1 exploratory well in Kohat, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
This development marks a significant step forward in unlocking the hydrocarbon potential of the region and strengthening Pakistan’s upstream energy sector.
Successful Testing of Lumshiwal Formation
The Bilitang-1 ST-1 well, which was spudded on August 10, 2025, was later sidetracked to target zones with improved reservoir quality.
Based on detailed interpretation of Logging While Drilling (LWD) and wireline log data, the Lumshiwal Formation was successfully tested, delivering a production rate of approximately 26.5 million standard cubic feet per day (MMscfd) of gas.
This strong flow rate confirms the commercial viability of the reservoir and enhances confidence in the block’s resource potential.
Advanced Data Analysis and Reservoir Targeting
The success of the appraisal is attributed to the use of advanced subsurface evaluation techniques, including LWD and wireline logging. These technologies enabled precise identification of high-quality reservoir zones, ensuring optimal well placement and improved production outcomes.
The strategic decision to sidetrack the well further contributed to maximising reservoir contact and performance.

The appraisal of this existing discovery significantly reduces geological and commercial risks associated with further exploration activities in the TAL Block.
