Chinese FM Wang Yi to Visit India for Border Talks on August 18
China and India Revive Dialogue Mechanism to Address Border Issues
Islamabad – 16 August, 2025 (Adnan Hameed) : The Chinese Foreign Minister, Wang Yi, is scheduled to visit India from Monday, August 18 to Wednesday, according to an official statement released by China’s foreign ministry, today.
This visit will make only the second high-level engagement between the two countries since the deadly Galwan Valley clash of 2020, a confrontation that significantly strained their relations.
In October last year, India and China reached an agreement to resume joint patrolling along the disputed Himalayan border, something that helped gradually ease stalemate, reviving crucial links in trade, investment, and air travel disrupted by the 2020 standoff.
During his two-day visit, FM Yi is expected to engage in talks under the Special Representatives mechanism, a framework revived to address the longstanding border dispute. His counterpart in this dialogue will be India’s National Security Advisor, Ajit Doval.
Though largely existing under the looming shadow of territorial dispute, relations between India and China are not as hostile today. Both countries are also grappling with high-intensity geopolitical shifts, such as navigating Trump’s tariffs.
While China and the United States are continuously in talks over tariffs, India has yet to initiate a dialogue that can lead to some sort of agreement or trade deal. In the meanwhile, Trump’s anger is increasingly directed at India, as he repeatedly points out complicity in Ukraine war for purchasing Russian oil.
Interestingly, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is also expected to travel to China later this month for the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit, where he will meet President Xi Jinping, the first direct encounter between the two in seven years.
Both leaders could have come face-to-face at BRICS Summit in Brazil but Xi did not take part, giving an impression of coldness and hostility. As for SCO, India has sent both its Defense and Foreign Ministers for ministerial level meetings of the SCO, in China.
Now Wang Yi’s India visit carries on the fragile momentum of reconciliation. Just recently, China welcomed the announcement of Modi’s in-person attendance for SCO summit in Tianjin.
