World Youth Festival opens in Russia

World Youth Festival kicks off with cultural immersion and phygital Games in Russia

Nizhny Novgorod – 19 September 2025 (Adnan Hameed) : The historic city of Russian Nizhny Novgorod on the Volga River has become a global crossroads for youth as it hosts the World Youth Festival Assembly from September 17 to 21. The event has gathered 2,000 young participants from across Russia and around the world for a program dedicated to cultural exchange, diplomacy, and a glimpse into the future of sport.

The inaugural day was dedicated to immersing guests in Russia’s rich historical and cultural tapestry. Participants embarked on tours of the city’s iconic landmarks, including the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin, Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Street, and the confluence of the Oka and Volga rivers at Strelka. Guided by the “Guides of Meanings” community, the youth explored exhibitions such as “Atom. Future,” celebrating 80 years of the Russian nuclear industry, and the WORKSHOP multimedia art space.

The visitors were effusive in their praise for the host city. “Nizhny Novgorod fascinated me with its beauty, coziness and special spirit. I truly love Russia and this wonderful city,” said Shaaban Malak from Egypt. Delia from Italy noted the city’s resemblance to her homeland and expressed deep respect for the country’s WWII history at the Kremlin. Another participant, Nolvazi Zhuber Mabilisi, was captivated by the view of the Volga, stating, “This is definitely a place I wish to live at.”

A highlight of the cultural program was the “Symphony of Time: Feel, Live, Create!” immersive show. The performance took the audience on a journey through Russian history, from ancient Rus and the golden age of culture to the Soviet era and the modern achievements of the 21st century, all set to a soundtrack of iconic Russian music.

In a blend of the physical and digital, Nizhny Novgorod was also declared the capital of the Phygital Games 2025. Festival attendees witnessed competitions in phygital basketball and hockey, which merge video gaming with real-world athletic execution. The games will feature 400 athletes from over 50 Russian regions and several countries.

Alongside the main events, a dedicated children’s program for 200 schoolchildren is underway. The young diplomats are developing projects focused on fostering international friendship, promoting values, and discussing ideas for the International Association of Children’s Organizations.

The World Youth Festival Assembly is organized by the Russian Federal Agency for Youth Affairs (Rosmolodezh) and the Government of the Nizhny Novgorod Region, with support from numerous state and corporate partners.
