World Environment Day

A Global Pact for Environmental Renewal

Each year on June 5th, the international community converges to observe World Environment Day—an occasion that transcends commemoration and enters the realm of collective responsibility. Initiated by the United Nations in 1972, this day has evolved into a global platform for environmental diplomacy, strategic discourse, and tangible action. With participation from over 150 nations, it is a solemn reminder of the interdependence that binds humanity and the planet we inhabit.

The annual themes of World Environment Day serve as focal points for urgent ecological concerns. In 2025, the global community turns its attention to the theme “Ending Plastic Pollution”, with the Republic of Korea serving as the host nation. This theme underscores the mounting crisis of plastic waste, which has infiltrated our oceans, soil, and even human biology, posing grave risks to environmental integrity and public health. Beyond these annual themes, however, lies an enduring truth: we are custodians, not owners, of this planet. Our policy decisions, economic systems, and everyday behaviors have lasting implications for the Earth’s ecological balance and for the generations yet to come.

In 2025, the Earth Day theme is “Our Power, Our Planet™”, emphasizing the urgent need to transition to renewable energy. The goal, set by EARTHDAY.ORG, is to triple global clean energy generation by 2030. Hayes, still a leading voice in the movement, predicts that solar energy will become the world’s top energy source within the next decade.

This year also marks a milestone: the Earthshot Prize will be awarded in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, coinciding with the UN Climate Conference (COP30). It’s a powerful symbol of hope and innovation from a country rich in biodiversity.

The message is simple but strong—we have the power to protect our planet, and the time to act is now.
