Cultural expert Uxi Mufti highlights living traditions in his lecture on Exploring Pakistan Cultural Heritage
Rawalpindi – 8 July 2025 (Adnan Hameed) : Renowned folklorist, cultural expert, and founder of Lok Virsa, Uxi Mufti, delivered a thought-provoking lecture on “Exploring Pakistan Cultural Heritage” at Fareezah School, Kotha Kalan, Rawalpindi. The event was held as part of the Fareezah x AIESEC Cultural Immersion Leadership Program and was attended by student interns from various universities in Rawalpindi. Former Ambassador Salahuddin Chaudhry was also present.
During his session, Uxi Mufti shed light on the depth and diversity of Pakistan’s living heritage, tracing its roots back to ancient civilizations. He stressed that while museums safeguard the past, Pakistan’s cultural essence remains vibrant in its people, oral traditions, crafts, and everyday life.
He also highlighted the socio-economic impacts of declining traditional crafts and professions, noting that their disappearance often leads to the breakdown of entire local economies. Addressing the youth, Mufti urged them to reimagine modernity—not as a break from the past, but as an evolution that respects and retains cultural identity.
Modernity isn’t about discarding our roots. It’s about expanding our thinking while staying connected to what makes us unique. If each of us adopts even one meaningful cultural practice, we can help rebuild our local economy, he said.
The session provided an eye-opening experience for the participants, encouraging them to engage with their heritage not just as observers, but as active custodians.
Fareezah School, a charitable institution in Kotha Kalan, currently educates 450 students with the help of 30 teachers. It is dedicated to enrolling out-of-school children from underprivileged families and preparing them for integration into mainstream education.
