The Liberty Bell: A symbol of American Freedom
Islamabad – 22 January 2026 (Adnan Hameed) : The Freedom Liberty Bell Initiative was officially launched by the U.S. Mission in Pakistan at Lincoln Corner Islamabad during the “Let Freedom Ring” ceremony, where Chargé d’Affaires Natalie Baker unveiled a symbolic bell reflecting the original dimensions of the historic Liberty Bell, marking the start of celebrations for the 250th U.S. Independence Day.
The Liberty Bell is one of the most enduring symbols of American independence and freedom. Located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the bell is recognized worldwide for its iconic crack and its association with the founding of the United States. The original Liberty Bell was cast in London and brought to Philadelphia to commemorate the 50th anniversary of William Penn’s 1701 Charter of Privileges, Pennsylvania’s original constitution, which guaranteed religious freedom and self-governance.
The bell bears the inscription: “Proclaim
LIBERTY Throughout all the Land unto all the Inhabitants Thereof Lev. XXV. v X.” This reflects the ideals of liberty and justice that inspired the American Revolution against the British in 1775. While there is no record of the Liberty Bell ringing when the Declaration of Independence was signed on July 4th, 1776 in Philadelphia, it was rung at the signing of the U.S. Constitution in 1787. It developed its famous crack sometime in the early 19th century and incurred further damage as it appeared at state exhibitions around the United States in the late-1800s. However, it remained symbolic during later freedom movements in America, with activists adopting it as an emblem of the fight to end slavery in 1865 and to advocate for women’s voting rights in the early 20th century.
Today, the Liberty Bell still stands as a powerful symbol of freedom, equality, and the enduring quest for justice. It is visited by millions each year at the Liberty Bell Center in Philadelphia. The Liberty Bell image is often used in civic celebrations and remains a reminder of the founding principles of the United States.
