Pakistan's Artistic Innovation

Moving Towards Plagiarism-Free Path

by Dr. Munazza Rashid | Published December 1st

Pakistan's Artistic Innovation
The cultural, academic, and artistic landscape of Pakistan is rich, diverse, and rapidly evolving. It is a nation grounded in deep-rooted traditions, yet poised for innovative breakthroughs across various disciplines. As global integration increases and Pakistan moves towards a more knowledge-driven society, the importance safeguarding original work, innovation, becomes more pronounced.
Pakistan’s Rich Cultural and Artistic Evolution
Pakistan’s cultural heritage is a blend of South Asian, Central Asian, and Islamic influences. From the ancient Gandhara civilization to Mughal architecture, and from Sufi poetry to contemporary visual arts, Pakistan has been a melting pot of creativity. Today, this artistic heritage serves as a source of inspiration for many while new forms of expression continue to emerge.
A Blend of Tradition and Innovation
In contemporary Pakistan, the art scene has diversified considerably. Fine artists like Sadequain and Zahoor ul Akhlaq, writers such as Faiz Ahmed Faiz and Bano Qudsia, and filmmakers like Shoaib Mansoor, have all contributed to creating legacies and rich heritage in art, literation and culture.

Art exhibitions, literary festivals, and film festivals have grown in prominence, providing a platform for Pakistani artists to showcase their work globally. Despite this flourishing scene, however, maintaining originality while addressing the growing issue of plagiarism remains a challenge.
Challenges of Maintaining Originality
Originality is at the heart of any art form, serving as a reflection of the artist’s personal vision, and intellectual labor.

Plagiarism, whether intentional or unintentional, is the theft of intellectual property. More specifically, in the academic realm, this is particularly critical as Pakistan strives to improve its educational standards and research output. The Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan has been proactive in implementing policies and using tools like “Turnitin” to detect plagiarism, ensuring that research conducted within universities adheres to global standards of originality.
Similarly, in the fine arts, a commitment required, ensuring that their work is original and free from plagiarism. In many academic and artistic circles, especially at the grassroots level, there is a limited understanding of what constitutes plagiarism and intellectual property infringement. The obvious reason are, firstly, insufficient training and education.

Secondly, the lack of access to quality resources, such as research journals, libraries, and artistic tools, can make it difficult for artists and scholars to engage in original work. Thirdly the the high costs associated with some art forms, which leads to replication existing works rather than innovate. Fourthly digital access has made it easier for people to hare content, as well as plagiarise.
The Role of Education in Combating Plagiarism
One of the most effective ways to combat plagiarism is through education. Specialised workshops, seminars, and training sessions on academic integrity and intellectual property can help students.

Artistic innovation can be encouraged through platforms that promote collaboration and experimentation. Interdisciplinary projects, residencies, and workshops that bring together artists from different fields (e.g., visual arts, digital media, music, and theater) can foster a culture of innovation.
Providing better access to research materials, libraries, art resources, and digital tools can encourage creativity and reduce the temptation to plagiarize. Universities and cultural organizations should invest in grants, residencies, and scholarships that support artisitc expression.

Recognizing originality through awards, exhibitions, and publishing fosters creativity, inspiring Pakistani society to prioritize innovation over imitation and celebrate talent.

The state of art in Pakistan is dynamic, vibrant, and increasingly global. However, as the country strives to position itself as a leader in creativity and innovation, it must prioritize originality and uphold a zero-plagiarism standard.
