Pakistan, Bangladesh Reconnect After 15 Years

After a 15-year pause, Pakistan and Bangladesh have officially resumed foreign office-level talks, marking a significant diplomatic milestone. The meeting, held in Dhaka on April 17, 2025, represents a renewed willingness from both sides to engage on key issues and explore areas of mutual interest.

Central to the discussions were long-standing concerns stemming from the 1971 war, including Bangladesh’s call for a formal apology and $4.52 billion in compensation. While these issues remain unresolved, the talks reflected a more constructive tone, with both countries showing openness to dialogue and reconciliation.

Beyond historical grievances, the two sides explored opportunities for enhanced collaboration in trade, agriculture, education, and regional connectivity. This diplomatic thaw comes amid a noticeable pivot in Bangladesh’s foreign policy under interim leader Muhammad Yunus, who is seeking to balance ties in the region following strained relations with India.

The resumption of dialogue is being viewed as a positive development for regional stability and could pave the way for deeper cooperation between the two South Asian nations in the years ahead.
