Colorectal Cancer Awareness Rally to Promote Prevention and Early Detection

Karachi – 26 March 2026 (MT Team) : In a powerful display of multidisciplinary collaboration, the Jinnah Sindh Medical University (JSMU) and Ward 7 of JPMC conducted a comprehensive Colorectal Cancer Awareness Rally. The initiative brought together faculty, clinicians, students, and staff to champion the critical importance of early screening, prevention, and education in the fight against one of the most prevalent yet preventable cancers.

The rally was held under the distinguished patronage of Prof. Amjad Siraj Memon, Vice Chancellor, JSMU, whose leadership and commitment to medical education and public health advocacy were instrumental in guiding this initiative.

The event commenced with an Awareness Walk from JSMU to Ward 7, symbolizing a unified commitment to combating colorectal cancer through community advocacy and visible leadership.

Following the walk, a Public Awareness Session was held in the Lecture Hall, Ward 7. The engaging session provided vital information to attendees, focusing on The critical importance of early screening and prevention, Recognizing the warning signs and symptoms and Promoting healthy lifestyle practices to reduce risk.

The occasion was graced by the presence of distinguished guests who lent their leadership and support including Dr. Khalid Sher, Executive Director, JPMC, Dr. Azam Khan, Registrar, JSMU, Dr. Ambareen Usmani, Principal, SMC-JSMU, Dr. Nazish Jaffar, of JSMU and Dr. Nausheen Razi, Deputy Director JPMC.

A highlight of the event was a Reel Competition organized by the SMC students of the Internal Medicine Interest Group (IMIG). Students showcased their creativity by producing impactful awareness messages. Winners were awarded prizes arranged by the GI Section, Ward 7, Medical Unit III, JPMC.

The event was conducted under the supervision of Prof. Shabnam Naveed. The main organizing lead was Dr. M. Masood Khoso, Assistant Professor of Gastroenterology, who worked alongside the dedicated faculty of Ward 7, including Dr. Saleem Shehzad, Dr. Marium Fatima, Dr. Ghulam Basit, Dr. Zaheer, Dr. Usman, and Dr. Areesha, with the invaluable support of IMIG students. This multidisciplinary initiative saw significant contributions from key departments, including Colorectal Surgery, Medicine, and Oncology.

“This event is a testament to the power of collaboration in medical education and public health,” said a representative from the organizing team. “By uniting our faculty, students, and clinical departments, we are reinforcing our shared responsibility to combat colorectal cancer—not just through treatment, but through proactive education and early detection.”

The event underscored JSMU and JPMC’s commitment to healthcare leadership and community well-being, marking a significant step forward in public health advocacy.
