Ambassador Ina Lepel Visits National Press Club, Addresses Journalists, Plants Sapling at NPC as Symbol of Friendship

Islamabad – 2 November 2026 (Adnan Hameed) : German Ambassador to Pakistan Dr. Ina Lepel visited the National Press Club (NPC) Islamabad and participated in an interactive session with journalists under the “Meet the Press” initiative.

Welcoming the ambassador, NPC President Abdul Razzaq Sial and Secretary Dr. Furqan Rao highlighted the longstanding relations between Pakistan and Germany and their cooperation in trade, education, development, and democratic institution-building. Dr. Furqan Rao also briefed her on the Press Club’s history, activities, and welfare initiatives for journalists.

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Ina Lepel stressed the need to increase bilateral trade, saying both countries had enormous potential for economic growth, investment, and business cooperation. She regretted that trade volume had not increased significantly despite longstanding relations. “I served in Pakistan in 2017 and have now returned again as ambassador,” she said.

Discussing regional developments, she appreciated Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts to promote peace, stability, and dialogue, particularly amid recent US-Iran tensions. She emphasized that diplomacy was the best way to resolve conflicts and prevent further escalation.

On Ukraine, the ambassador condemned Russia’s military actions, expressed solidarity with the Ukrainian people, and called for respect for sovereignty and international law. She said Germany and European countries continued to provide political, economic, and humanitarian support to Ukraine.

Regarding educational opportunities, Dr. Lepel said Germany remained a preferred destination for Pakistani students due to its quality education and research facilities. She confirmed an increase in student visas but acknowledged delays caused by a growing number of applications. She added that German authorities were working to simplify and accelerate visa processing.

During the session, journalists raised questions about bilateral relations, education, regional security, and global developments. The ambassador highlighted the importance of media, people-to-people contacts, and educational exchanges in strengthening ties.

The visit also included a tour of the Press Club and the planting of a sapling as a symbol of friendship and environmental sustainability. At the conclusion, President Abdul Razzaq Sial thanked the ambassador and reaffirmed the NPC’s commitment to promoting dialogue among diplomats, policymakers, and journalists.
