Federal Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervaiz Malik attended the event as Guest of Honour

Islamabad – 27 October, 2026 (Adnan Hameed) — Austrian Ambassador to Pakistan Wolfgang Oliver Kutschera has reaffirmed Austria’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations with Pakistan, emphasizing greater cooperation in trade, investment, energy, technology, education, culture and people-to-people exchanges.

The Ambassador made these remarks while addressing a reception marking Austrian National Day 2026 in Islamabad. Federal Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervaiz Malik attended the event as Guest of Honour, alongside senior government officials, parliamentarians, diplomats, business representatives and other distinguished guests.

Highlighting more than 72 years of friendly diplomatic relations, Ambassador Kutschera stressed the importance of mutual respect, dialogue and cooperation in further strengthening ties between the two countries. He identified economic cooperation as a key priority, particularly in hydropower, green energy, railway technology, medical devices, project management, and food and beverages.

He also highlighted Austria’s Refocus Austria initiative to promote business partnerships and investment opportunities. Both countries are working towards reconvening the Austrian-Pakistani Joint Working Group on Economic Cooperation, with an in-person meeting anticipated in Islamabad in spring 2027.

The Ambassador described Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif’s official visit to Vienna in February 2026, at the invitation of Austrian Federal Chancellor Christian Stocker, as an important step towards expanding trade, investment and economic cooperation. He also welcomed Austria’s election as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for the 2027–2029 term, reaffirming the country’s commitment to international law, human rights, multilateralism and peaceful dialogue.

Referring to regional and global challenges, including ongoing conflicts, rising energy prices and food affordability concerns, the Ambassador acknowledged Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts to facilitate dialogue and mediation. Austria’s Federal Minister for European and International Affairs, H.E. Beate Meinl-Reisinger, also addressed the gathering through a video message, outlining Austria’s guiding principles for its upcoming UN Security Council membership.

The Ambassador further highlighted cultural and educational cooperation as an important pillar of bilateral relations. Recent initiatives included academic engagements by Austrian law professor Stefan Hammer, literary activities featuring author Gertraud Klemm, musical performances by Austrian artists, and Austrian film screenings at the EU Film Festival.

He also acknowledged the role of the Pakistan Austria Fachhochschule in Haripur in promoting academic exchange and cooperation. The Embassy’s support for Theatre Wallay’s production Teri Hastí, Terá Hunar, which focused on women’s empowerment and female entrepreneurship, was highlighted as an example of cultural engagement reaching communities beyond major cities.

Recalling the historical connections between the two countries, Ambassador Kutschera cited Austria’s financial and logistical assistance in the development of the Malam Jabba ski resort as a practical example of their longstanding friendship and cooperation.

Concluding his address, the Ambassador expressed appreciation to Austrian and Pakistani partners for their continued contributions and reaffirmed the Embassy’s commitment to building new partnerships and expanding existing areas of cooperation.
