Xi Says Taiwan Independence Threatens Strait Peace

China opposes Taiwan independence, citing it as a threat to Strait peace: Xi Jinping

Beijing – 10 April 2026 (Adnan Hameed) : Xi Jinping, General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), met with Cheng Li-wun, Chair of the Chinese Kuomintang (KMT) party, on Friday morning in Beijing.

Xi said this meeting between the CPC and KMT leaders after 10 years is of enormous significance, reported by Chinese Media.

People on both sides of the Taiwan Strait hope for peace and tranquility, improved cross-Strait relations, and better lives. This is a responsibility that the CPC and the KMT cannot shirk and also a driving force for the two parties to work together.

This is the first time in a decade that a KMT chair has visited the Chinese mainland at the head of a delegation, at the invitation of the CPC Central Committee and Xi. The delegation had visited Jiangsu and Shanghai before arriving in Beijing.

This meeting between the leaders of the CPC and the KMT, the first in ten years, is of immense importance for the development of relations between the two parties as well as across the Taiwan Strait, Xi said.

No matter how the international landscape and the situation across the Taiwan Strait evolve, the irreversible trend toward the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation will not change, and the dominant momentum driving the Chinese people on both sides of the Strait to draw closer will not change, Xi emphasized.

He added that the people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait aspire to peace and tranquility, improved cross-Strait relations, and a better life. “This is a responsibility that neither the CPC nor the KMT can shirk, and it is also a driving force for collaboration between the two parties,” Mr Xi stated.

President Xi expressed his willingness to work with all political parties in Taiwan, including the KMT, as well as groups and individuals from all sectors, to strengthen exchanges and dialogue, promote peace across the Taiwan Strait, improve the well-being of the people, and advance national rejuvenation, based on the common political foundation of respecting the 1992 Consensus and opposing “Taiwan independence”.

He called for forging closer ties across the Strait by upholding a correct understanding of identity.

“Differences in social systems must not serve as a pretext for secession,” Mr Xi said.

He called for protecting the common homeland through peaceful development. At the core of this protection of the common homeland is the recognition that the two sides of the Strait belong to one and the same China, Mr Xi affirmed.

“We welcome any proposals that promote the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations and will spare no effort to advance initiatives in this direction,” Mr Xi stated, adding that “Taiwan independence” is the primary culprit undermining peace across the Taiwan Strait. “We must neither endorse nor tolerate it.”
