The Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDC) has announced the successful commencement of oil production from its development well, Pasakhi-13, located in the Hyderabad district of Sindh.
This achievement marks a historic milestone for Pakistan’s energy sector, as Pasakhi-13 is the country’s first successful horizontal oil well in a clastic reservoir (Lower Goru – A Sand).
Currently, the well is producing approximately 460 barrels of oil per day (BPD), contributing to enhanced domestic energy output.
Advanced Geo-Steering Enables Precision Drilling
A key factor behind the success of Pasakhi-13 is the use of advanced geo-steering technology. This enabled precise navigation within a narrow three-meter drilling window, ensuring optimal placement of the wellbore within the reservoir’s most productive zone, often referred to as the “sweet spot.”
This level of precision is critical in complex reservoirs, where even minor deviations can significantly impact production performance.
Horizontal Drilling Boosts Production Efficiency
Despite challenging reservoir conditions, OGDC adopted a horizontal drilling approach that significantly improved reservoir exposure. As a result, Pasakhi-13 is delivering nearly three times higher production compared to nearby offset wells operating under similar geological conditions.
This demonstrates the effectiveness of modern drilling techniques in unlocking previously underutilised hydrocarbon reserves.
Optimised Completion with ESP Technology
The well was completed and tested using a short string Electric Submersible Pump (ESP), specifically designed for horizontal well configurations. This optimisation ensures efficient fluid lifting and stable production, even in technically demanding environments.
The integration of ESP technology further enhances the well’s operational performance and long-term viability.
Strategic Importance of Pasakhi Field Development
Pasakhi-13 is part of the Pasakhi & Pasakhi North Development & Production Lease (D&PL), where OGDC holds 100% working interest. This gives the company full operational control and the ability to implement advanced technologies to maximise output.
