Canada and OGDC Explore Collaboration in Energy and Mining Sectors
Pakistan and Canada took an important step toward strengthening bilateral cooperation in energy and mining as Canadian High Commissioner Mr. Tarik Ali Khan visited the OGDC Head Office on 11 November 2025. He met with MD/CEO OGDC, Mr. Ahmed Hayat Lak, to discuss collaborative opportunities across the upstream oil and gas sector as well as the expanding mining industry.
Canadian Interest in Pakistan’s Energy & Mining Landscape
During the meeting, the Canadian High Commissioner reaffirmed the Canadian Government’s and Canadian companies’ strong interest in deepening engagement with Pakistan in the Exploration & Production (E&P) and mining sectors. The discussion focused on potential joint ventures, knowledge-sharing, and new avenues for bilateral investment.
Canada’s history of technical expertise and innovative resource development positions it as a valuable partner for Pakistan’s rapidly evolving energy and minerals landscape.
Reviving Technical Training Through OGTI
Both sides recalled Canada’s longstanding contribution to Pakistan’s upstream capacity building. Through earlier Canadian technical assistance, OGDC professionals received training at the Oil & Gas Training Institute (OGTI) — a Centre of Excellence established to support skills development for the upstream sector.
Recognizing the value of this collaboration, the High Commissioner and OGDC CEO agreed to restart training programs at OGTI in partnership with Canadian institutions. The renewed initiative aims to introduce modern technologies, safety practices, and global industry standards to Pakistan’s workforce.
Canada Shows Interest in OGDC’s Expansion into Minerals
The High Commissioner also highlighted Canada’s keen interest in OGDC’s strategic diversification into the minerals sector, particularly its investment participation in the world-class Reko Diq Project. The project represents one of the largest undeveloped copper-gold deposits globally and is a cornerstone of Pakistan’s future mineral economy.
Canada expressed appreciation for OGDC’s growth-oriented approach and emphasized its readiness to explore partnership models that could support sustainable development and technical advancement in Pakistan’s mining sector.
A Step Toward Stronger Bilateral Cooperation
The meeting concluded with a mutual commitment to expanding cooperation in exploration, mining, training, and technology exchange. As Pakistan focuses on strengthening domestic capacity and attracting high-quality foreign investment, partnerships with established mining and energy leaders like Canada offer significant long-term potential.
OGDC’s proactive engagement demonstrates its commitment to fostering international collaboration and advancing Pakistan’s energy and minerals industries through innovation, global partnerships, and sustainable development practices.
