Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has achieved a major milestone by posting its first annual profit in over twenty years. For the fiscal year 2024, the airline reported an operating profit of PKR 9.3 billion and a net profit of PKR 26.2 billion after deferred tax adjustments. This remarkable financial turnaround reflects the success of a series of structural reforms introduced over the past year. Key measures included workforce rationalization, route optimization, and the enforcement of strict financial controls, all aimed at reducing operational inefficiencies and improving service delivery.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif praised the achievement, calling it a “major turnaround after decades of losses,” and emphasized the government’s commitment to further strengthening national institutions. The profit not only restores confidence in the state-owned carrier but also signals potential for attracting new partnerships and investment in the aviation sector. PIA’s improved financial health could pave the way for strategic expansion and modernization efforts, positioning it to compete more effectively on international routes. This development is also expected to boost public confidence and morale, especially among Pakistanis who rely on the airline for domestic and international travel.
