Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) has launched a remarkable programme to distribute 100 fully equipped ambulances, worth Rs 200 million, to district and tehsil headquarter hospitals and basic health units (BHUs) across Pakistan. This initiative is designed to strengthen the country’s health services and improve access to emergency medical care in underserved regions.
The ambulances, distributed in collaboration with local administrations, will primarily serve hospitals surrounding OGDCL’s operational fields. The launch ceremony took place at OGDCL’s head office in Islamabad and was attended by key figures in the health sector, including the Federal Secretary of Petroleum Division, Captain (Retd) Muhammad Mahmood, who was the chief guest at the event.
A Significant Step for Healthcare Access in Pakistan
OGDCL’s Managing Director and CEO, Ahmed Hayat Lak, highlighted the importance of the programme, emphasizing that it would significantly improve people’s access to health services, especially in remote areas where healthcare infrastructure is limited. He reaffirmed OGDCL’s commitment to social responsibility, sharing that the company has undertaken various initiatives not only in health but also in education, water supply, sports, and infrastructure development.
Key Features of the Ambulance Distribution Programme
OGDCL’s Executive Director (Services), Zia Salahuddin, provided a detailed overview of the ambulance distribution process. He outlined how the ambulances would be equipped with the necessary medical tools and how the distribution would take place in close coordination with local authorities. This effort is expected to have a profound impact on improving the referral system, which is crucial for delivering timely medical assistance in life-threatening situations.
OGDCL’s Commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)
Captain (Retd) Muhammad Mahmood, the Federal Secretary of Petroleum Division, praised OGDCL for taking this significant step under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme. He commended the company’s ongoing efforts to improve public health in the areas where it operates. His speech also included valuable insights into how CSR initiatives could be further strengthened, with a particular focus on youth development and capacity building.
Babar Iftikhar Warraich, Manager of External Communications at OGDCL, also shared the company’s track record of exceeding its CSR obligations. He highlighted that OGDCL has consistently focused on welfare projects in communities near its operational sites, providing essential health services to local populations.
“OGDCL has always gone above and beyond its CSR obligations,” said Warraich. “In areas with limited healthcare facilities, this initiative will make a massive difference, particularly in providing emergency medical services to those who need it most.”
Impact on Public Health Services
The new ambulances will play a vital role in strengthening Pakistan’s public health system. They will not only assist in providing timely referrals for patients in critical conditions but will also enhance the ability of health services to respond effectively to medical emergencies. This initiative is especially important for residents of remote areas who often face difficulties accessing healthcare due to poor infrastructure and long travel distances.
By improving access to emergency services, OGDCL’s CSR programme is set to have a lasting impact on the lives of people in underserved communities. The company’s dedication to improving public health reflects its broader commitment to the welfare of Pakistan’s citizens.
Past CSR Achievements
This is not the first time OGDCL has undertaken a large-scale initiative in the health sector. In 2019-2020, the company distributed 15 basic life support ambulances in its operational districts at a cost of Rs 95.4 million, further cementing its role as a leader in corporate social responsibility in Pakistan.
